Do you visit your hometown much? I’m from Tokyo, and I haven’t been there for ages. And it’s probably not the best time for travelling far from Washington State.
My husband Peter is from Bishop, CA, and sometimes we visit the Eastern Sierra area in the summertime. Especially I love going there during Memorial Day weekend through early June so we can watch the Annual Mule Days Parade. But due to the pandemic, it didn’t happen this year.
Peter mentioned that he grew up with an amazing donkey, named Pedro, when he was young. His family used to go on backpacking trips with Pedro into the Sierras for several weeks.
Pedro was very smart and a great guardian of the family even at the camp site. He had a happy life for almost 40 years.
Several years ago, when Peter’s dad was still around, we visited him in Bishop around Memorial Day weekend. We all went to see the parade in downtown.
This parade is one of the biggest and most famous mule parades in the world. So many people and animals participate in the event. Beside mules of all kinds, I saw many donkeys.
But there was one cute donkey that caught my eye. He was wearing a hat and bandanna, looking like a cowboy. I took some photos of him, and I enjoyed painting him more than once.
What was your favorite animal you grew up with when you were little?
